PULP PRODUCERS SUPPORT GOVERNMENT STRUGGLE IN APEC

The Government's plan to propose pulp and paper products which were based on Industrial Plantation Forest as green product in the next APEC meeting was highly appreciated by producers of national pulp and paper producers. President Director of PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) Kusman Rahmin stated that pulp and paper which were already SLVK certified were made of qualified raw materials so they deserve appreciation by buyers.

“SLVK is a guarantee of Indonesia’s food legality, which is also the ground of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)” Rahmin said on Monday (4/2).

RAPP themselves already had their SLVK certificate and Sustainable Forest Products (PHPL) of the forests which they managed since 2010.

Kusnan stated that if Government’s proposal were approved, they would open fairer trading gates. He disclosed that a number of pulp producing countries were imposing import tax to well out import of pulp from other countries.

On the other hand, Indonesia imposed import tax of zero percent. Kusnan also predicted that that Government's initiative would bring positive impact on performance of Indonesia’s pulp and paper exporting. Moreover the APEC market, particularly in Asia would constantly grow.

Based on analysis of the Poyry institution, demand for pulp at global stage was estimated to increase by 2.6% per year. Of 26.5 million metric tons in 2010 to become 38.9 metric tons in the coming 2025.

The greatest growth came from the Asian market with China as locomotive growing by 6.4% per year. Demand from Chine might increase by up to 14.3 metric tons in 2025 against the previous 5.6 metric tons in 2010.

Meanwhile other Asian countries were projected to grow by 1,8% per annum, from 4,3 million metric tone in 2010 to 5.7 metric tons in 2025.

Demand for paper products was also predicted to increase globally at 1.3% per annum tram 58.1 metric tons in 2010 to 70 metric tons in 2025. Asia dominated in the world’s demand for paper. Demand for papas in China was predicted to grow by 2.35% per annum from 14.9 million metric tons in 2010 to 21.2 metric tons in 2025. Meanwhile demand for paper products in Asia could grow by 3.6% per year from 8.6 million metric, tons in 2010 to 14.5 metric tons in 2025.

Meanwhile producers of tissue paper was shocked as they found out they were obliged to be SLVK certified. Unlike other paper products which used short fibre pulp from wood, most of tissue papers were based on long fibre pulp.

Most of Indonesian pulp producers were using short fibre pulp so the prevalent raw materials were imported long fibre pulp. Therefore pulp producers demanded to be exempted from the obligation of having SLVK certificates.
