Government proposes ‘less expansive’ budget

The government has proposed a conservative, less expansive, 2010 state budget bill Monday, featuring more focused spending priorities that may make next year’s budget more efficient than previous ones. In a speech Monday at the House of Representatives, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said government spending next year would reach US$ 101.69 billion. Much of the spending will go to paying for civil servants’ higher salaries and pensions, continuing social welfare programs for low-income citizens, and infrastructure projects in transportation, agriculture, energy and other labor-intensive sectors.
