Construstion of Teluk Lamong Multipurpose Terminal is aimed at anticipating congestion in Tanjung Perak Port. The capacity of international container terminal in Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya has reached 1.45 million TEU’s, while total container flow by 2014 is estimated at 1.82 million TEU’s, so there will be a 472,102 TEU’s overflow.

Tanjung Perak port, Surabaya, can only accommodate container ships of 1.5000 TEU’s as the depth of the sea is only -9.5LWS. To accommodate larger ships, the government will speed up process of revitalization of west shipping channel planned in 2003 due to high increase in volume of cargoes and ships at Tanjung Perak Port. If the west shipping channel has been completed, Tanjung Perak port could accommodate container ships of 3.00 TEU’s – 5000 TEU’s because the sea depth becomes -14 LWS. With bis ships entering the port, it is expected that sea transportation cost at Tanjung Perak Port will be cheaper. The west shipping channel revitalization project is expected to be constructed by March 2013, because if the sea depth becomes -13LWS it is expected to be operational by 2014. Big ships will enter the port and transformation cost will be cheaper. ( E )
