TO AXE BUDGET WOULD HOLD BACK FORESTATION PROGRAM

Member of commission IV of House Siswono Yudhohusodo regretted axing of forestation budget by the ministry of forestry such would make programs not evenly distributed and would hamper forestation priorities. Budget reduction by the ministry of forestry to the amount of Rp359 billion, would supposedly have the reduction portion minimized. House member Siswono expressed his grievances to the minister of forestry Zulkifli Hasan at the parliament building on Monday [16/10].

Against ceiling budget of the ministry of forestry 2014, budget was being reduced to Rp1.78 trillion against ceiling of budget of 2013. According to Suswono, axing of budget to that extend might hold back priorities for forestation program. Although the ministry of forestry had proposed new initiative worth Rp1 trillion, the indicative ceiling budget of 2014 remained to be lower than 2013.

Furthermore in the management of integrated Riverbank Zones [DAS] in 11 DAS, Siswono called the attention of the ministry of forestry to prioritize rivers which were the source of water for reservoir lakes. Many lakes were in the process of shallowing which was truly disheartening. For example in Kalimantan, many rivers turned into paths for people’s traffic and were not passable in the dry season.

In addition to that was proposed that Commission IV of House summoned happening in their operational zone. The destruction happening in the Dieng highland was extremely terrible and the same thing was happening in nearly all mountainous zones in Java. Many forests under the management of PT Perhutani were also in critical condition and must be rehabilitated at once. (SS)
