Findings of the Netherlands expert team on flood control presented, actions proposed

The findings of the Netherlands expert team on flood control study completed in December 2007 were the basis for a presentation on 15 January 2008 to the Minister of Public Works (PU) and the Jakarta City Government (DKI) on follow-up structural measures. The model used for flood hazard mapping was used to analyze the effects of structural measures upon request of the World Bank which is considering a loan agreement for reducing risks of flooding. The no-regret recommendations to the Minister were to start immediate dredging in four rivers under PU's administration and four rivers and four basins under DKI's administration. Estimated costs are US$ 150 million, and the World Bank is willing to provide a US$ 100 million loan for this. For the medium term, finalizing the East Banjir Canal and connecting it to the Ciliwung river was proposed. Also improved solid waste collection and sanitation require increased attention. PU and DKI will discuss the recommendations internally, and with Vice President Kalla. A visit of a delegation of PU and DKI to the Netherlands is planned for March 2008 to discuss further technical aspects of dredging under conditions of Jakarta.
