Economic growth fails to resolve income gap problem: BPS

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said the country's relatively high economic growth had not yet been able to narrow the income gaps between different segments of the Indonesian people. "Theoretically and ideally, economic growth should narrow the income gaps among groups of people. But it has been difficult to achieve this in practice," BPS Chief Rusman Heriawan said. But he said small- and medium-scale enterprises (UKMs) had played a significant role in boosting economic growth this year so that there was a guarantee for a better income of this sector which involved most people in the middle- and low-income brackets.
